Romania is a country rich in areas, which are particularly suited to wine growing that slope down among gentle hills towards the Black Sea. Vines have most certainly been grown here for over 4,000 years; this developed a flourishing wine trade with Greece over 2,700 years ago and then with Rome, during the period og Catilina, who was in love with Dacia. It has a temperate continental climate and four well-defined season.
Varieties typical of the German region can be found in the area, such as Riesling, Tocai, Pinot, and also Cabernet, Merlot, Sauvignon, Muscat Ottonel, as well as a range of local varieties, like Feteasca and Burgund.
This international varieties have been Romania's heritage for centuries.
In the aighties, Romania was the sixth world producer of wine with substantial exports to Enotria was set up in 2000, in the north-west of Romania, in Izvin (literally meaning wine area) and classified in the D.O.C. Recas in the province of
Timisoara.
After two years of experimentation, started with 100 hectares of old
vineyard, 200 hectares of old vines are being uprooted and a modern vineyard is being
planted, which, alongside the prestigious international vines, foresees the recovery of native, red and white
vines. Production is currently limited to the traditional, native red Burgund
vine.
